We’re frequently told that a detox is a great way to start your weight loss regimen. Is this actually true, and if so, why exactly?
Yes, it absolutely is true. The reason why, is because the process of weight loss releases stored toxins from our fat cells, right into our bloodstream. When this happens, we not only experience fatigue (if they’re not swiftly eliminated), but we also end up having a plateau in our progress while our vitality drops and we lose motivation to exercise and often start craving again.
Further insight as to why a detox appears crucial prior to a weight loss plan, is guided by research into POPs (persistent organic pollutants). Latest studies describe how accumulated toxins in adipose, are, as we know, released during lipolysis (breakdown of lipids into glycerol and free fatty acids), and when not eliminated, result in something far worse than fatigue and a lack of motivation.
What you ask?
Well, as POPs cannot actually ‘break down’ what they do, is get progressively more concentrated in the smaller amount of fat tissue that does remain in our body. Another detrimental route, is that when our adipose tissue is broken down, the POPs become redistributed into those other vital places like our connective tissue, brain and nerves, where we unquestionably, do not want them going.
If toxins begin to accumulate in connective tissue, people can experience generalized joint pain, aches in their bones or blood-related conditions. This is because both blood and bone are actually considered connective tissue. Fun fact. When myelin, the fatty sheath of insulation that lines all of our nerves, is impacted, we may also experience headaches, and if the innermost part (nucleoli) of enough cells in one area are impacted heavily, our DNA can even be affected.
Some detox sites, state that most people have between 400 to 800 chemical residues stored in their fat deposits. These figures alone seem pretty indicative to me, that a detox, prior to weight-loss, is a very necessary measure, for safety at least! A proper holistic detox will mean those nasty POPs can be expelled via your stool.
It might also be worthwhile to consider an infrared sauna during your detox. It is said that at 110 F (43.3 C) fat deposits become water-soluble and can be disposed of via perspiration. Moreover, our cellulite, a gel-like substance made up of fat, water & waste products stored just below the skin, may also be more easily eliminated. Who doesn’t want that!?
So what are the benefits of detox before weight loss?
- You prevent your body from deep tissue toxic load
- You don’t experience fatigue and headaches during your weight loss
- You don’t have to fight with sugar cravings (detox helps to reduce sugar cravings)
- You lose weight easier, you don’t have a weight plateau
- It is easier to control your appetite
